Centre of Expertise for Cooperative Entrepreneurship (KU Leuven)
The Centre of Expertise for Cooperative Entrepreneurship of the KU Leuven has been launched in 2016 in partnership with Cera and Boerenbond. It aims to develop research on cooperative organisations. Building on this research, it also intends to provide evidence-based courses on cooperative entrepreneurship and management both in initial and life-long learning education programmes. Overall, as a centre of expertise, its ambition is to raise awareness on the cooperative organisational model and its added value, as well as to contribute to reinforcing capacity of the cooperative sector.
It currently develops a broad research program on the bottlenecks to cooperatives’ development in close collaboration with the practitioners, among which Febecoop and SMart, which are founding members of the Consortium.
Planned contributions to the Consortium include research work on governance of cooperatives and on member involvement. The latter is likely to be a great challenge for platform cooperatives, which often have a broad and possibly geographically spread membership base. In terms of education, the Centre of Expertise is willing to participate in the development of the MOOC on platform cooperativism, as it usefully complements the educational programmes on cooperatives that it is developing at KU Leuven.
