Stocksy United (Stocksy) is an artist-owned cooperative providing high-quality stock photos and video footage to clients around the world. We are driven by creative integrity for our product, fair profit sharing, and making business an inclusive and personal process for our members and clients. Stocksy pays 50%-75% of every purchase directly to our artists in an effort to support sustainable careers and so that our artists can keep making awesome pictures and videos. Surplus at the end of the fiscal year may be set aside to pay back to members–in 2016, we made our first patronage payouts of $200,000 to our artists. That number is even higher for 2017.
As a cooperative, our business differentiates itself from other models by focusing on autonomy, democracy, equality, and solidarity. Being a member of Stocksy represents bringing change through ethical business practices that best support our artists and embodying a commitment to communicating with transparency and participating in community education, mentorship, and support.
Stocksy is a multi-stakeholder cooperative with three classes. Class A is our high-level advisors, Class B is full-time staff and contractors, and Class C is our artists. Class C is the largest with over 900 members, while Classes A and B together total around 25 members. Members are active and vocal, submitting resolutions, brainstorming solutions and new ideas, and generally taking their role as owners very seriously.
As part of the Platform Cooperativism Consortium, Stocksy will strive to be a vocal advocate of the online co-op structure, adapting the co-op model, and managing and scaling online international co-op communities, while at the same time communicating with Canadian government entities regarding how to improve co-op legislation to better serve platform co-ops.
